ROSIGNANO MARITTIMO

ROSIGNANO MARITTIMO - The Civic Archaeological Museum of Rosignano Marittimo is arranged in chronological sections from the Etruscan to the Medieval periods with brief sections of prehistory and the Modern Age. It illustrates the history of the middle and lower valley of the Cecina river and the Livorno coast, corresponding to the ancient Volaterranus and Pisanus regions within the context of the history of northern ETRURIA. The most important exhibits are Hellenistic material from the large necropolis of Castiglioncello (over 300 tombs), including an interesting alabaster urn of Volterran manufacture (2nd century B.C.), Roman and Etruscan material from the port of Vada, numerous under-water finds and finally great numbers of unpublished medieval and renaissance finds from the Castle itself. The museum with its scale models and reconstruction is intended as an introduction visit to the territory, suggesting itineraries to be followed and an explanation of that part of its ancient history that is no longer directly visible.
